Next Sunday 1st of December come celebrate Antarctica Day with us!
APECS Belgium will be at the Royal Belgian Institute for Natural Sciences of Bruxelles all day to let you discover more about the white continent with plenty of activities. You will have the chance to get one of our newly released storybooks and to visit the Antarctic exhibition at the Museum!
But do you know why do we celebrate this day?
On the 1st of December of 1959, 12 nations signed the Antarctic Treaty, setting aside nearly 10% of the Earth “forever to be used exclusively for peaceful purposes (…) in the interests of all mankind”. The Antarctic Treaty became the first nuclear-arms agreement and the first institution to govern human activities in an international space (a region beyond sovereign jurisdictions).
