The turnover of early career scientists within a relatively small field in a relatively small country can be quite high. Consequently, every year there are new people entering the scene of Belgian polar researchers, while others continue their adventures elsewhere.
As APECS Belgium we strive to accommodate for that with a relatively flexible organization – everyone joining APECS and listing “Belgium” as her/his country of residence automatically joins APECS Belgium at any time! Accordingly this can be revoked at any time.
In addition, we have created a slightly more formalized structure for the APECS Belgium leadership – our APECS Belgium Board, which is chaired by one person. All board members commit themselves to this role for a one year period. This structure as well as our goals are laid out in our terms of reference: APECS_Belgium_ToR. All of this hopefully helps to make sure that APECS Belgium is and remains active – even if people come and go.
Currently this system seems to work very well. After our APECS Belgium Day in September, we have once more grown our board and welcome Valentina as new chair. The new board is already in full action with many projects underway for the near and not so near future. So, keep an eye out and feel free to get in touch with any questions or ideas!
